Well give you the comprehensive care you need.
Hemophilia is an inherited clotting disorder in which Clotting Factors VIII and IX are deficient or missing. This causes prolonged bleeding which can occur anywhere in the body, including muscles, joints, and vital organs.
Major bleeding may result from an injury or surgery, but bleeding may also be spontaneous, with no warning and no apparent cause.
Since hemophilic blood clots very slowly, bleeding is often prolonged and may become life-threatening if it isnt stopped. Bleeding can be stopped by prompt treatment with clotting factors administered intravenously.
Hemophilia doesnt discriminate. It affects all races and socio-economic levels alike. However, persons with Hemophilia are almost always male, inheriting an abnormal gene from their mothers - carriers of the disorder.
Comprehensive care is a special type of care provided by a team of medical psychosocial experts specializing in treating those with Hemophilia and Gaucher Disease.
The team at the Hemophilia Center of Western New York works together to provide specialized services and quality care for each person with Hemophilia. Regularly scheduled multi-disciplinary clinics are conducted to provide complete evaluations and treatment plans for each client.
In addition to outpatient clinics at two locations for walk-in treatment by medical staff, the Center also provides a home care program which enables persons with Hemophilia to lead normal, productive lives.
The home care program involves intravenous treatments with the missing clotting factor being administered in the home by the patient self-infusing or a family member assisting. This program provides more immediate treatment - avoiding the delay, stress and cost of emergency room care.
The Hemophilia Center of Western New York is located in the Erie County Medical Center for adult services and at the Women and Childrens Hospital of Buffalo for pediatric services. The Center services the entire Western New York region including Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties and is the only agency of its kind providing comprehensive services for persons of all ages with Hemophilia in this service area.
